Sarasota County’s educated and creative workforce is diverse enough to satisfy both new and expanding businesses. More than half of Sarasota County’s population is in the prime working age range of 18 to 64. Adding the labor pool from bordering Manatee and Charlotte counties expands the total to more than 370,000.
Sarasota County’s workforce is infused each year with young talent emerging from area high schools, colleges and universities, as well as the valuable resource of relocated, experienced corporate executives, managers and technicians. More than half the adults in the workforce 25 and older have continued their education at the college level.
Health care and tourism/recreation are major employment sectors. Growth in manufacturing, technology, life sciences and financial service jobs continue to build strength into the local economy. Many Sarasota County jobs are in small- to midsized businesses.
For many years, Sarasota County enjoyed below average unemployment. With the recent economic downturn and job losses, the pool of unemployed has risen. Nevertheless, the number of new companies and business expansions in the area has increased, holding great promise for continued job growth.
